Steve McLaren - Managing Director
Steve originally graduated as a commercial apprentice in the Medical Imaging business working for Thorn-EMI. He remained in this business in Senior Purchasing and Manufacturing roles working for G.E. Medical and Picker International until 1988. Steve then moved into the Railway Signalling business in 1988 working for GEC-General Signals who subsequently became ALSTOM. For the past 8 years he has held various Global Vice President roles in Sourcing, Supply Chain and Product Development.Having been in the signalling business for the past 20 years Steve has gained extensive knowledge in both Projects and Products.
Steve Simmonds - Operations Director
Steve is an Electrical Engineer with over 20 years Railway experience of multi-discipline and signalling contracting. He joined SSL in December 2007 and brings a large amount of senior management experience in the signalling field.
Prior to joining the railway industry he worked for 10 years in steel manufacturing, starting in 1979 as an apprentice electrican.
Steve was appointed to the position of Operations Director in July 2009.
Billy Unadkat - Finance Director
Graduate and Fellow Chartered Certified Accountant, Billy joined SSL in March 2010. Having originally qualified in the rail industry with what now is Bombardier; where he was responsible for the finance of London Underground & C2C rail fleet service contracts.
Subsequently for 10 years he has been Finance Director, within Manufacturing, FMCG & Construction Technology sectors, while leading financial strategic management in the UK, US & EMEA regions.
James Thorley - HR Director
MCIPD qualified, James has over 25 years experience within Human Resources, focusing primarily on Employee and Industrial relations. James joined Alstom Transport in 2005 as HR Manager before taking up the role of HR Director with the formation of Signalling Solutions in 2007. Prior to joining Alstom James gained extensive HR experience within the Automotive and Manufacturing sectors, with Kautex/Textron and Fiskars respectively, where he held Senior HR positions.
Simon Stockwell - SHEQ Director 
A graduate Civil Engineer, Simon joined Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering in 1989 as Project Manager responsible for railway disciplines on a contract to extend the Docklands Light Railway. On its formation in 1996, Simon moved to Balfour Beatty Rail Projects, primarily working on large re signalling schemes such as Warrington, Dartford, Leeds and Willesden. He was appointed as General Manager of Balfour Beatty’s Signalling Unit in 2004 where he expanded capability by introducing SSI technology via the acquisition of Bombardier’s UK signalling company. With a desire to lead Balfour Beatty’s Signal Unit into the Major Signalling market, Simon started negotiations with Alstom’s UK signalling arm in 2005 which resulted in the formation of Signalling Solutions in 2007.
On the formation of Signalling Solutions, Simon took up the role of Operations Director overseeing the delivery re signalling schemes at Colchester, Milton Keynes, Trent Valley and Barnham.
In 2009, Simon took up a dual role as the ‘Safety, Health, Environment and Quality’ Director as well as the Director responsible for the development of Signalling Solutions low cost Modular Signalling System.
Mike Stevens - Business Improvement Director
With formal training in Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control systems, Mike’s career has focussed on project-centred businesses. With over 30 years experience in Project Management, he has successfully delivered schemes employing a wide range of technologies with values from below £1m to over £60m.
Since 1991 Mike has been involved in the railway signalling industry, running a number of projects, as well as working in product development, marketing and tendering. Mike is a Member of the Association for Project Management and an Associate Member of the IRSE.
Paul Harris - Head of Commercial
After 12 years experience in the construction sector with J F Finnegan Ltd Paul then spent 13 years in the rail industry with Jarvis Rail Ltd where he held a number of senior commercial positions across the group. These included Senior Commercial Manager for the electrical projects division and Commercial Director Rail. After a short spell working in the defence sector Paul joined SSL as Head of Commercial in July 2011.
