The Hitchin signalling upgrade project covers the route between Stevenage and Biggleswade on the mainline and to Letchworth on the Cambridge line.
The project involved changing the geographical interlocking at Hitchin to a new interfaced Solid State Interlocking (SSI) housed in a new brick-built equipment room.
The new equipment room houses two new 2MHz SSI cubicles (03 HITCHSTN - Hitchin South and 04
HITCHNTH - Hitchen North) a Local Control Panel (LCP) and a technician’s terminal. The LCP can be switched in at any time to control the area locally; emergency All Signals On control; and an override system.
The new equipment room also accomodates all the Trackside Functional Modules (TFMs) and interface relays which are used to control the existing trackside infrastructure.
Control for this area is maintained at Kings Cross power signal box (PSB) with the transmission being renewed utilising the newly-approved Westronic 1024 panel processor system.
The transmission system utilises the existing Fixed Telecoms Network (FTN) to link Hitchin and Kings Cross PSB.
