Case History - Smartlock 400g trial and Pilot

The Trial and Pilot Project was awarded to Alstom in May 2007 as the first "pilot" installation of Smartlock 400 in the UK. The objective of the Project was to install, test and commission the Smartlock 400 system in place of the existing 3 No. SSI Interlocking system at Three Bridges Area Signalling Centre.

SSL carried out, on behalf of Alstom, three phases of work :

—  Trial Testing on the Dorking Branch, which included the installation of the Smartlock 400 System, the performance of static tests under possession and the use of Test Trains to carry out dynamic tests under possession;

—  Pre-Pilot testing across the whole Horsham Scheme, which included the performance of static tests under possession and the use of Test Trains to carry out dynamic tests under possession;

—  Test and commissioning of the Smartlock 400 System, followed by a Pilot period of six months during which Smartlock 400 controlled the operational railway.

The success criteria for the System were as follows:

—  Smartlock 400 can communicate with existing trackside infrastructure;

—  Smartlock 400 can provide diagnostic processing;

—  Smartlock 400 can follow UK Railway Signalling Principles via the implementation of the SSI data language and the application of signalling control tables;

—  Smartlock 400 can achieve 100% availability of a six month period with no errors attributable to the system;

—  Smartlock 400 can be permitted to control the operational railway within the Horsham scheme, allowing removal of the mechanism that allowed the fallback to SSI.

The Trial phase was completed in December 2007 and ISRP endorsement of the Trial results was given in January 2008.

The Pre-Pilot Phase was completed in May 2008 and ISRP endorsement of the Trial results was given in June 2008.

The System was commissioned in October 2008 and the Pilot Period was completed Apr 2009, with no availability–affecting failures ISRP endorsed the Critical Review Report in June 2009 and the System Final Arrangement was completed in July 2009, including the permanent disconnection of the existing SSI interlocking equipment.
