Case History - Trent Valley 4 Tracking

The Trent Valley Four–Tracking re–modelling and re–signalling project formed a major section of the WCRM upgrade. The route upgrade from a two–track alignment to a four track alignment between Tamworth and Armitage also required signalling improvements to be made between Tamworth (Amington Jcn) & Atherstone.

In order for the upgrade to proceed a number of enabling packages had to be facilitated. The enabling works had to be carefully constructed so as to maintain the operational functionality of the route without significant alteration the control of the railway. Thus alterations were limited to line side infrastructure only.

The re–signalling works were designed to provide increased capacity and throughput for the WCML with full bi–directional signaling being applied to the routes between Nuneaton (Atherston fringe) & Lichfield (Curborough Jcn) on the Fast Lines.

In order to achieve this it was necessary to raise line–speeds to 125 mile/h.

Improved reliability coupled with shorter journey times to London were key deliverables along with improved safety characteristics. This involved the removal of life expired assets and re–control of the new alignment to Rugby SCC where six new SSI interlocking were introduced to interface to the MCS control system.

Signalling Solutions were responsible for the introduction and commissioning of :

126 LED signals mounted on retractable crown pole on new 4 and 6 track gantries.
Approximately 581 kilometers of lineside cables for signalling, power and telecommunications
Control of 23 points
Installation of 126 Location Cases
Installation of 7 REB's
Installation 239 Axle Counter Heads
Installation of 37 TASS Balises
